Characteristics :

Tongol are a member of the family Scombridae. These dark blue-backed fish are recognized by their short pectoral fins and slender bodies. Tongol are also distinguished by the presence of elongated, colorless spots on the underside and belly, between the pectoral and anal fins.

 
Habitat : In waters along the Malay and Burmese coasts, also around the Indonesian archipelago.
 
Harvest Areas :

Tongol tunas are mainly caught from the Western Pacific Ocean and some from the Indian Ocean.

 
Confusing species :

Similar in appearance to Southern Blue fin, but possess a more streamline body, particularly the rear half.

 
Product Characteristics : The meat is quite tender and has an almost white color. It has not too much taste. It is by some more appreciated as a canned product then the somewhat drier Albacore meat.
